Title: Nibelheim
Series: FFVII
Pairing: None
Rating: PG
Summary: We're evil.
We’re evil. You can feel it, feel it in the town below and the mountains above, a cradle of malevolence. We twist the weak, string them out and wring them/choke them/break them until they are ours, until they don’t even remember what it was to be theirs. We wreck the strong, drown them in the evils of this town, these hills, this valley, until they shatter, and then we twist until blood drips out, and more.
You know we’re evil. You feel it lying thick and damp over the cobbled streets, filling the houses with rank air, thick as honey in the creaking corridors of the mansion, sickly-sweet. You see it in the far-focused eyes of the townspeople, in the crippled shuffling creatures in black, in the monsters which rely on confusion and silence for their blood and feed just as happily on their own pain as yours. You hear it in the fire that crackles in your dreams, in the broken tolling of the town bell, in the whispers riding the wind.
And still, you don’t recognise us. Don’t believe what your senses tell you – oh, how they love to trick you. Don’t believe your nostalgic childhood home could be anything other than a quiet sombre monument to what was lost. You hear us calling and ignore it as the madness in your own head – we are there too. We broke your General, your scientists, your Turk. He knows us, sees all that passes here as black and white, and he will not speak out because he is one of us, he has swum in our dark river and we will not let him go.
We won’t let you go, either. You are twisting, you are breaking, and even if you won’t acknowledge it you feel our cold grasp on your skin, in your mind. You believe leaving can save you, that you can walk out from the shadow of this valley and escape us, but you are wrong. We are watching you, we are in you, we are you, Mako-ghost who was born in our grasp and grew in our shadow and soaked our doorstep with your lifeblood, and we will twist you and break you until –
“Cloud? Can we go? This town’s giving me the creeps.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Let’s go.”
– sooner or later, you join us.
