Maybe my tough-love, she-wolf style of mothering is showing, but I think Konzen made a great parent once he got used to having a chibi Goku around disrupting his quiet, orderly life. Konzen was dying inside of boredom before Goku turned up; whatever you think of Kanzeon, she was right that Goku was good for him. And in any incarnation, Konzen/Sanzo/whoever can bring the Seiten Taisei under control.
I devoted a whole journal post after I read Gaiden to foaming at the mouth about Goku being stuck with Sanzo instead of someone more like Konzen. Goku's emotionally mature enough not to be too damaged by that, but it makes me want to kick Sanzo sometimes, what with calling him monkey and threatening him with the gun (the harisen doesn't bother me as much), and just generally not recognizing that Goku is a high-energy, high-spirited youth. But he wants to help him when the chips are down, and he would have learned from the disaster that was Goku's near-death in Reload 7.
