Na, it wasn't abrupt, but was unexpected and I hardly doubt you're unable to write romance (please do).
Although I have to say that I had to reread the end of chapter 4 and the beginning of chapter 5 cause it felt like the mood shifted from panic to seriousness somewhat suddenly...or maybe I was the one panicked, lol
